THE TRAINING NOTEBOOK
How to calculate weight on a barbell
Add your bar and paired plates, with an editable kg and lb calculator and worked examples.
The calculation
Total weight equals the bar weight plus all plates on both sides. With a balanced load, add the plate weights on one side, multiply by two, then add the bar. Read the markings on your equipment rather than assuming every bar has the same weight.
Barbell weight calculator
Enter the plates on one side. The calculation includes an identical set on the other side. It totals equipment weight; it does not choose a training load.
A worked example in kilograms
A 20 kg bar with one 20 kg plate and one 5 kg plate on each side totals 70 kg: 20 + 2 × (20 + 5) = 70. The count is per side, so one pair means one plate on the left and one on the right.
A worked example in pounds
A 45 lb bar with one 45 lb plate on each side totals 135 lb: 45 + 2 × 45 = 135. A 20 kg bar is about 44.092 lb, not exactly 45 lb. Use the actual marked bar weight for your calculation.
Collars, mixed units and unusual bars
The calculator excludes collars. If you need them included, add the combined weight of both collars to the calculated total. Convert mixed units before adding them. Fixed-weight barbells, machine stacks and assisted machines need their own conventions; this calculator does not estimate resistance or leverage.
Keep the total useful in your log
Record the total consistently in your workout log. Add a note if the equipment or weight convention differs from your usual setup. This website calculator is separate from the Weights app; it does not claim that the app automatically selects or recognizes plates.
Common questions
Does the total include the bar?
Yes. The bar field is added once. Enter zero if you deliberately want a plates-only total.
Does a plate count of two mean two plates total?
No. It means two plates on each side, four plates total.
Does it recommend how much to lift?
No. It only calculates the mass of the equipment you enter.
